If I experience soreness should I take time off from working out?
The feeling of soreness is going to be perceived differently by everyone. In fact feelings of soreness can be a good thing as this is an indication that there has been cellular damage to the involved structures and they are in the process of rebuilding themselves to become stronger. However, soreness can be a bad thing if the feeling is not allowing you to function properly when the soreness comes on.
For example if you are so sore following a hard workout that you can’t even lift your arms or walk then you really need to re-evaluate how hard you are working out. Pushing yourself to this point is more of a set back rather than an improvement to your fitness. This is because you will most likely spend the rest of your week recovering from that one workout instead of training more in that week if you hadn’t pushed yourself past optimal levels. Overall, the more training you do the more you learn about how much soreness is optimal for your body.
Therefore, continue to listen to your body and make sure you are working hard enough in the gym to see wanted improvements and not so hard to be causing unwanted cellular damage to the involved structures. Also, next time you have doubts ask your trainer for more advice.
